Rolfe breaks tie, helps D.C. United top Whitecaps, 2-1

Chris Rolfe broke a tie in the 64th minute to help D.C. United beat the 10-man Vancouver Whitecaps, 2-1, on Saturday night in British Columbia. D.C. United (4-1-2) ran its unbeaten streak to five games. Whitecaps captain Pedro Morales opened the scoring in the second minute, and Bobby Boswell tied it in the ninth. Vancouver (5-3-1) was reduced to 10 men in the 42nd minute when referee David Gantar showed midfielder Matias Laba a second yellow for clipping the foot of onrushing Fabian Espindola. Laba also was cared for in the 34th minute for a handball.

Pitcher Shawaryn sets Terps career wins mark

Sophomore right-hander Mike Shawaryn earned his 21st career victory to set Maryland's all-time record as the No. 20 Terps topped Purdue, 12-3, in Game 1 of a doubleheader Friday night at Alexander Field in West Lafayette, Ind. The Carneys Point, N.J., resident struck out 10 over seven innings and did not walk a batter. Shawaryn, the reigning National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Pitcher of the Week, was dominant over his seven innings. He retired the first six batters of the game and allowed just four hits. He has not given up a run in his past 20 innings. Shawaryn's 21 wins are the most for any sophomore in the country. He has struck out 92 batters, most in the Big Ten. Junior Kevin Martir had three runs and three RBIs. Maryland won the second game, 7-3, to improve to 29-13 overall and 10-4 in the Big Ten; Purdue is 13-30 and 1-13.

More baseball: Towson (11-29-2, 5-12 Colonial Athletic Association) fell behind 6-0 and lost, 10-6, to host James Madison (15-24, 4-13) on Saturday afternoon. ... Shepherd senior outfielder Matt Wilson (Essex Community College, Archbishop Curley) was named a semifinalist for the Tino Martinez Award, which goes to the nation's top Division II player.

Softball: Lindsey Schmeiser hit a two-out double in the fifth inning, her 20th of the season, breaking the Maryland single-season doubles record, but the host Terps (26-23, 8-11 Big Ten) lost, 10-2, to No. 4 Michigan (44-6, 17-2). Michelle Burrell had 19 doubles in 2001. The announced attendance of 941 set a school single-game attendance record. ... Maryland senior catcher Shannon Bustillos has received an NCAA Ethnic Minority Program Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics.

Football: The University of Maryland Terrapin Scholarship Fund board of directors named coach Randy Edsall the winner of the inaugural Commitment to Academic Excellence Award, which will be given annually to a coach, coaching staff or team that exemplifies the highest level of commitment to student-athlete academic performance.

College caravan: Penn State football coach James Franklin and athletic director Sandy Barbour will participate in the Penn State Coaches Caravan tour stop the night of May 6 at the Hilton Baltimore BWI Airport in Linthicum Heights. They'll be joined by men's hockey coach Guy Gadowsky, women's golf coach Denise St. Pierre and football assistants Charles Huff and Sean Spencer. Ravens met with corner Wilson at scouting combine

Oklahoma cornerback Julian Wilson met with the Ravens at the NFL scouting combine, discussing defensive schemes with secondary coach Chris Hewitt. "I met with them and it was really good," Wilson told The Baltimore Sun. "We went over board work, going over coverages my team was doing and some Ravens stuff. They wanted to see if I had a good understanding of the game. It was fun."

More football: Calvert Hall coach Donald Davis is one of seven USA Football Master Trainers who will lead instruction during a pair of clinics in South Korea. Hosted by the U.S. Army Garrison at Camp Humphries, the clinics Saturday and next Sunday will include children of servicemen and servicewomen stationed in that country.

Golf: Baltimore Country Club and Columbia CC recorded victories to move into the championship pairing of the 92nd Team Matches of the Maryland State Golf Association. Baltimore ended Ocean City's best advance in at least eight years when it won, 142/3-31/3, while Columbia defeated Beaver Creek CC, 10-8. The Hagerstown club swept the final two matches at home to narrow the gap. The title match will be played today at Columbia at 12:30 p.m.

Pro basketball: Former Towson All-America forward Jerrelle Benimon was named to the All-NBA D-League first team and all-rookie first team. In 44 games for the Idaho Stampede, an affiliate of the Utah Jazz, he averaged 19.8 points, 11 rebounds, 4.4 assists and one block per game.

Men's tennis: Two-time Grand Slam champion Lleyton Hewitt, 34, has committed to play in the Citi Open in August in Washington as one of his final stops on his road to retirement.

Baseball: The Toronto Blue Jays designated infielder Steve Tolleson, an Oriole in 2012, for assignment. He was hitting .200 in 15 at-bats. ... The U.S. K1M team of Michael Rudnitsky, Spencer Huff and Tyler Westfall of Darnestown was 18th. The U.S. K1M junior team of Tyler Smith, Jordan Sherman of Rockville and Henry Bergen of Bethesda was 12th.

Varsity softball: Meghan Jacobs hit a two-run homer and Lexi Jones went 2-for-2 with an RBI as visiting No. 3 Liberty (14-11) earned an 8-1 win over Westminster (5-5).
