Digest (March 17): Blast top Heat, 8-2, clinch MASL playoff spot

With an 8-2 victory over the host Harrisburg Heat on Sunday, the Blast clinched a spot in the Major Arena Soccer League Ron Newman playoffs. Adriano Dos Santos led the Blast with three goals and an assist, Andrew Hoxie also had a hat trick and William Vanzela made 14 saves for his 12th victory of the season. The Blast (13-6), who are tied for the Eastern Division lead with Utica City FC, return to SECU Arena for their final homestand of the season next weekend, beginning with the Orlando Seawolves on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

No. 1 Salisbury men dominate in 23-1 victory


Josh Melton scored five goals and Tyler Snyder had four to help host No. 1 Salisbury roll to a 23-1 win over Montclair State (3-3) in men’s lacrosse. The Sea Gulls (8-0) outshot the Red Hawks 61-22 and won 17 of 27 faceoffs. It is the first time Salisbury has held a team to one goal since defeating Washington College, 14-1, on March 11, 2017.

State women: Carly Bowes scored seven goals to help Stevenson (3-2) secure a 15-12 win over Geneseo (3-1) at Ann Dever Park in Englewood, Fla.


Nation men: Tristan Rai scored four goals to lift No. 16 Lehigh (5-3, 3-0 Patriot League) to a 15-7 victory over host Lafayette (4-5, 0-3).

Nation women: Emily Hawryschuk had five goals and two assists to help No. 4 Syracuse (8-2, 2-1, Atlantic Coast Conference) secure a 14-7 win over host Louisville (4-7, 0-3). … Sara Goodwin scored the game-winning goal 1:10 into overtime to lift host Virginia Tech (6-4) to a 15-14 win over No. 13 Denver (7-2).

Trainer Gonzalez enjoys four wins at Laurel Park

Joseph Besecker’s Nyx Warrior ($16.80) came with a steady rally on the far outside to edge Moon Virginia at the wire in Sunday’s fifth race and complete a perfect afternoon for Laurel Park’s winter meet-leading trainer Claudio Gonzalez. Gonzalez won with each of his starters Sunday, taking four of the first five races, including three in a row. His other victories came with Dr. Cerrato ($10.20) in Race 1, Cool Alley ($4.60) in Race 3 and Belmont Ride ($11.40) in Race 4. Gonzalez leads the winter meet with 36 wins and nearly $900,000 in purse earnings. On Saturday, he won Race 4 with Completed Pass ($13.80) and Race 6 with Dynamax Prime ($15.60), and was third with Tybalt in the $100,000 Private Terms and second with Rockinn On Bye in the $75,000 Not For Love. Meanwhile, jockey Sheldon Russell had a riding triple Sunday, aboard Colmont Fire ($29.80) in Race 2, Top Hat Tizzy ($6) in Race 7 and Past Perfect ($16.60) in Race 8. Also, the 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved Sunday at Laurel, growing the carryover jackpot to $24,420.27 for the return of live racing Friday. Major League Soccer: Wayne Rooney had a hat trick and added an assist to help D.C. United beat nine-man Real Salt Lake, 5-0, on Saturday night. Lucas Rodriguez scored in the 76th and Ulises Segura capped the scoring in the 80th. Bill Hamid had his third shutout in three games for D.C. United (2-0-1). Real Salt Lake dropped to 1-1-1.
