Digest (March 8): Blast stop Syracuse surge to win MASL playoff opener, 7-6

The Blast held off a late Syracuse rally to defeat the Silver Knights , 7-6, in Game 1 of the Major Arena Soccer League Eastern Division final. Daniel Peruzzi and Vini Dantas each had two goals for the Blast. Bo Jelovac recorded two goals and one assist for Syracuse. The Blast built a 5-0 lead early in the second half and then had to hold on. Tony Donatelli, Jamie Thomas and Jonathan Greenfield each recorded an assist for Baltimore. Pat Healey had six blocks and goalkeeper Joey Kapinos made 14 saves for the Blast. The Blast host Game 2 of the best-of-five series Sunday at 5:05 p.m. at Towson's SECU Arena. If Syracuse wins Game 2, a mini-game will be played Sunday to decide the division title.

Fishing: Bryan Schmitt of Deale is in fifth place at the after the first day at the FLW Tour at Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Ga. He caught a five-bass limit of 18 pounds, 13 ounces and trails leader Bradley Hallman of Norman Oklahoma by 4 pounds, 14 ounces in a field of 184 of the world's best bass-fishing professionals competing for top awards of up to $125,000 cash in the pro division.

Men's college lacrosse: Liam Limoges scored four goals to lead No. 15 Vermont (7-0) to a 17-14 victory over visiting Sacred Heart (3-4). The Pioneers put together a 5-0 rally late in the game that fell short.

Women's college lacrosse: Albright scored the final 10 goals of the first half and rolled to a 17-9 victory over McDaniel. Olivia Geiger (Marriotts Ridge) led the Green Terror (3-2) with three goals.

College baseball: Freshman Randy Bednar had three hits, including a solo home run, but Maryland fell, 7-1, to visiting Delaware.

Navy women advanceto Patriot League final

Taylor Dunham scored 18 point to lead five Mids in double-digit scoring as visting Navy (25-6) won, 68-62, over Bucknell (22-9) in a Patriot League semifinal Thursday night. Navy has won nine of its past 11 games and will face American in Sunday's championship. Other double-figure scorers for the Mids were Hannah Fenske (13), Bianca Roach (10), Kaila Clark (10, Archbishop Spalding) and Laurel Jaunich (10). Navy will be making its seventh Patriot League championship appearance. ... Braennan Farrar scored 14 points, but sixth-seeded Morgan State (16-15) lost, 66-57, to third-seeded Hampton (17-13) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference quarterfinal in Norfolk, Va. The defending champion Pirates opened with a 24-11 run in the first quarter and led by as many as 15 points.

Men's awards: Johns Hopkins' Josh Loeffler ECAC Division III Coach of the Year and junior Michael Gardner was named honorable mention All-ECAC. ... Former Johns Hopkins coach Bill Nelson is one of three recipients of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division III Outstanding Service Award.
