Digest (Jan. 16): Former Arundel star Beckerman re-signs with Real Salt Lake

Midfielder Kyle Beckerman (Arundel) re-signed with Real Salt Lake, receiving a multiyear contract that will extend the tenure of the league's all-time career leader in regular-season games played, games started and minutes played among field players. A nine-time MLS All-Star and a U.S. national team World Cup veteran with 58 caps, Beckerman, 35, has played for RSL since arriving in a trade from the Colorado Rapids in 2007 and has captained the squad for much of that time.

National Women's Soccer League: The Washington Spirit acquired U.S. national team defender Taylor Smith and 2017 NWSL Rookie of the Year forward Ashley Hatch via trade from the North Carolina Courage. In exchange, the Courage will receive an international roster spot and the NWSL rights to U.S. international forward Crystal Dunn, who signed for Chelsea Ladies after the Spirit's 2016 season. Smith and Hatch, who have each played their way into the national team player pool in recent years, both had integral roles in helping the Courage advance to the NWSL championship final. ... The Spirit acquired the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 college draft from the Houston Dash in exchange for forward-defender Lindsay Agnew and the No. 6 pick in Thursday's draft.

Men's college basketball: Freshman basketball player Barry McCormick (Archbishop Spalding) is the Shoreman of the Week after scoring a career-high 20 points off the bench in Washington College's 111-103 double-overtime win over Dickinson on Sunday.

Men's college track and field: Stevenson junior sprinter Kendall Belser (Old Mill) was named Middle Atlantic Conference Track Athlete of the Week. Stevenson freshman long jumper and high jumper Dimeon Wright (Winters Mill) was named MAC Field Athlete of the Week.
