He was born Edilson Xavier. According to a story written in 2007 for the Baltimore Examiner by Sean Welsh, who now works for The Sun, the young goalkeeper was out for a post-game celebration with his Brazilian club teammates and ordered a gelatin-like dessert called “sagu.”
“Nobody else eats sagu. Everybody calls me Sagu now. It’s easier for little kids to say Sagu than Edilson,” he said in the article.
