What's in a name? A lot, just ask Sagu, former Blast goalkeeper

The Blast announced Wednesday that former goalkeeper Sagu, of Sao Paulo, Brazil, will be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame. But he should also be in a Hall of Fame of great sports names.

When he was announced before a game at Baltimore Arena, the place rocked. But how did he come to be Sagu?

Former Blast goalkeeper Sagu, who spent eight seasons in Baltimore and was part of three championship teams, will be inducted into the franchise’s Hall of Fame.

He was born Edilson Xavier. According to a story written in 2007 for the Baltimore Examiner by Sean Welsh, who now works for The Sun, the young goalkeeper was out for a post-game celebration with his Brazilian club teammates and ordered a gelatin-like dessert called “sagu.”

“Nobody else eats sagu. Everybody calls me Sagu now. It’s easier for little kids to say Sagu than Edilson,” he said in the article.
