College roundup: Navy's Jacob Williams named Patriot League Rookie of the Year

Jacob Williams (Old Mill) was voted the Patriot League Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Year, the league office announced on Monday afternoon with its postseason awards.

Williams was also selected to the All-Patriot League Second Team, while freshman Matt Nocita was placed on the Third Team All-Patriot League. Williams becomes the third Midshipmen to be selected as the Patriot League Rookie of the Year. He joins Michael Paisant (1997) and Derek Vogel (2012) to earn the recognition.

On the season, Williams led Navy with eight goals and 16 points during his first collegiate campaign. His eight goals scored were tied for second most in the Patriot League, while he finished tied for fourth with 16 points.

In league matches, Williams finished with seven goals and 14 points, both of which were the most in the Patriot League. He also led the league with three game-winning goals in league contests.

During his first collegiate season, the Millersville native took a team-leading 47 shots with 19 ending on target to also lead the Midshipmen. He started in 16 of the 17 matches this season racking up 1,317 minutes, which was fourth on the team. Williams ended the season scoring in six of his last eight appearances and scored seven goals in that stretch.

Nocita anchored the Navy defense this season as he was one of three players to start all 17 matches this year. Nocita was the lone individual for Navy to play all 1557:22 of the season and led a trio of players in notching over 1,500 minutes on the field this season.

Navy was able to finish tied for fifth in the Patriot League standings this season but missed the postseason after being shuffled to seventh overall following tiebreakers. The Midshipmen ended the season with a record of 5-11-1 overall and a 4-5-0 mark in the Patriot League.

NAVY INTERCOLLEGIATE SAILING: Jessica McJones rounded out the fall season for the Navy intercollegiate sailing team after posting a 10th-place finish at the ICSA Women’s Singlehanded National Championship this past weekend. McJones was one of the 18 individuals in the country to qualify and compete in the Laser Performance Women’s College Sailing Singlehanded Nationals in Macatawa Bay, Mich.

NAVY OFFSHORE SAILING: The Navy offshore sailing team concluded the 2018 portion of its season this past weekend with a second-place finish at the Kennedy Cup. Navy’s crew was captained by George Davis with Matthew Signorelli, Sean Caraher, Zackary Bauer, Jonathan Hitt, Zachary Krause, Tom Hawkins and Grace Vandergrift also on the crew.
