Dennis Pitta, Brandon Williams, John Urschel highlight returning players to Ravens practice Saturday

Dennis Pitta, Brandon Williams, John Urschel among Ravens players who returned to Saturday’s practice.

Three projected starters in tight end Dennis Pitta, left guard John Urschel and nose tackle Brandon Williams were among five players who returned to Ravens practice on Saturday morning.

Pitta had not practiced since Aug. 1 when he broke a finger on his right hand in a scuffle with rookie linebacker Kamalei Correa. With the season-ending Achilles tear suffered by Benjamin Watson in a preseason game against the Detroit Lions on Aug. 27, and Darren Waller and Nick Boyle to begin serving multiple-game suspensions, the presence of Pitta – who had a red, non-contact jersey tucked into the rear waistband of his shorts – was a welcome sight for the team. Second-year tight end Maxx Williams also returned, from an unspecified ailment.

Urschel (contusion) returned for the first time since starting in the team’s preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 11. Brandon Williams (undisclosed) had started in the second exhibition contest against the Indianapolis Colts on Aug. 20, but had been absent since then. Free safety Kendrick Lewis (unspecified) also was present for practice.

A number of players were absent from practice. That list includes cornerbacks Shareece Wright, Jerraud Powers (undisclosed) and Carrington Byndom, outside linebackers Elvis Dumervil, Za’Darius Smith (ankle) and Victor Ochi, wide receivers Michael Campanaro and Chris Matthews, defensive tackle Carl Davis (left ankle), running back Kenneth Dixon (sprained left knee), strong safety Matt Elam (knee), center Ryan Jensen, defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore, and offensive tackle De’Ondre Wesley.

Players such as Dumervil and Campanaro might be on the mend, but it’s possible that the players listed without an injury have been waived by the team prior to Saturday’s 4 p.m. deadline to trim rosters to 53 players.
