Ed Reed will be back in Baltimore after all, this time playing for the New York Jets.
The Jets announced today that they have agreed to terms with the Ravens' longtime free safety just a couple of days after Reed was released by the Houston Texans. The move reunites Reed with his former defensive coordinator in Baltimore, Rex Ryan, who is now the head coach of the Jets.
The Jets will face the Ravens next Sunday at M&T; Bank Stadium, giving Reed a second opportunity to return to the city where he played for the first 11 seasons of his NFL career. Reed received loud applause when he returned to M&T; Bank in Week 3 of the season as his Texans were beaten, 30-9, by the Ravens.
Reed, 35, didn't make much of an impact in that game, finishing with three tackles. He was cut by the Texans this week after he made 16 tackles in seven games, including five starts. Reed had recently lost his starting safety job and probably sealed his fate with the Texans when he said after Sunday's loss to the Arizona Cardinals that Houston had been "outplayed and out-coached."
There was some speculation after his release that he could re-sign with the Ravens, but coach John Harbaugh shot down that possibility Wednesday.
"Ed's a Raven, he'll always be a Raven," Harbaugh said. "I'm sure he'll be in the Ring of Honor someday, in the Hall of Fame someday. We've kept in touch with Ed off and on here regularly. He's a good friend of everybody here. There are no plans to change our secondary personnel at this time. We're happy with what we have. Our guys are playing well, so that's where we're at."
