Reports: Grubbs, Redding to make free agent visits

We’re two hours into free agency and the national news continues to come fast and furious. Now we have a bit of Ravens news being reported by a pair of national outlets. CBS Sports reports that Ben Grubbs will meet with the New Orleans Saints tomorrow. ESPN says that Cory Redding is visiting the Indianapolis Colts tonight.

Grubbs is widely regarded as the second-best guard in free agency behind Carl Nicks, who was a Pro Bowl player for the Saints in 2011. The fact that Grubbs is reportedly visiting the Saints suggests that Nicks and the Saints are headed to Splitsville. Grubbs is expected to be a cheaper alternative to Nicks, but if the Saints make him an offer, will it be enough to convince him to walk away from what the Ravens have already offered him?

Meanwhile, it’s no surprise that Redding is visiting the Colts. We -- and pretty much everyone else -- have speculated that former Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano would try to poach a player or two from the Ravens. The Colts are switching to a 3-4 defense under Pagano and they need veterans who know his scheme. The Ravens have youngsters Arthur Jones and Pernell McPhee to fill the void should Redding depart.

In other news, former Colts wide receiver Pierre Garcon has signed a five-year contract with the Washington Redskins. I thought he would be a great complement to Anquan Boldin and Torrey Smith here in Baltimore, but not at five years for $42.5 million with $21.5 million guaranteed. Maybe it might have worked out if all those receivers hadn’t received franchise tag designations by their respective teams earlier this month, jacking up Garcon's price.

The Redskins have also reportedly signed Josh Morgan AND maybe Eddie Royal soon, too. The Ravens want to bring in a wide receiver at some point this offseason, but there might not be any left in free agency by the time the Redskins are done spending.
