Ravens Q&A; with Mike Preston

Each week, Baltimore Sun columnist Mike Preston will answer a selection of reader's questions about the Ravens game day performance. This week, Preston and readers discuss Cam Cameron's play-calling during the Bills game, Greg Mattison's defensive schemes and the play of the cornerbacks, who gave up 374 yards of passing offense against the winless Buffalo Bills. Ryan:Loyalty aside, do you think the Ravens will realistically look to replace [Greg] Mattison with a legit NFL Defensive Coordinator in the off-season? Mike Preston: Ryan, the last time I checked Mattison doesn't make tackles or let receivers run by him. The Ravens tried just about everything possible Sunday against the Bills, and when nothing works, you better start looking at the players, not the scheme. Anyway, it's still a long season. There is no reason to panic yet. In Baltimore, when things go poorly, fans start asking for coaches to get fired. Some fans wanted Mattison fired at the beginning of last season, and the Ravens ended up with one of the top five defenses in the league. Joshua: Mike, do you think the NFL's new rule has ROBBED the game of it's best asset? Because I noticed in a lot of the highlight reels, Defensive players are not playing hard anymore. Mike Preston: The defensive players are still playing hard, but not just as reckless. This rule was meant for a few head hunters in the league, like No. 92 in Pittsburgh. For the most part, the game won't change, and fans will keep paying to see their gladiators on Sunday afternoons. TJ: So who will be replacing Fabian Washington next week? This could be the worst performance by a starting CB I've ever seen. The WR's don't even have to make moves against him, just catch the ball and run into the end zone. Mike Preston: John Harbaugh didn't make any changes, at least Monday at his news conference. There aren't a lot of options here. If we're basing the starter on who performed well at cornerback against the Bills, then the Ravens will be playing without two corners and a safety. But all joking aside, Washington has been solid most of the season. He just had a bad game. No, he just had a really bad game. A DeRon Jenkins type game. But, he deserves another shot, at least the chance to start another game. Bob: What's going on with the Ravens defense in the 4th quarter? This is the second week in a row that they have squandered a 10-point lead. Mike Preston: The sad truth is that they can't close any more. They have talent, but not as dominant as in years past. Before Harbaugh arrived, the Ravens had an emphasis on drafting defensive players. Once they brought in a new staff, the emphasis changed and the Ravens drafted better offensive players, particularly offensive linemen. The major issue with the Ravens is that teams no longer fear their defense, especially the run defense. Teams with no-name running backs have been gaining more than 100 yards against the Ravens. We knew the secondary was suspect before the season started, but I thought the e run defense would be sound. It's not, and I assume the Ravens will make some changes during the off season. It would also help if some of the younger players like end Paul Kruger and tackle Terrence Cody stepped up their games. Rookie outside linebacker Sergio Kindle certainly didn't help the cause with his injury shortly before training camp started. John: Mike, why have the Ravens refused to use Le'Ron McClain in the role of short yardage and 4th quarter grind-it out back? Mike Preston: The Ravens prefer Willis McGahee in that role, and Ray Rice is more powerful than he looks. Also, remember in those situations you usually need a fullback and the Ravens have only one on the roster,McClain. As a lead back, he has had another strong season. I like the idea of the Ravens actually throwing him a pass last week. I bet the Bills were caught off guard. There are other ways to get McClain into the game besides as a runner or lead blocker. Steve: Why is it that Cam Cameron cannot get T.J. Housmandnzadeh into the game? Just cannot understand that even a little bit. Mike Preston: Because he has Anquan Boldin, Derrick Mason and Todd Heap ahead of him. It ain't hard to figure out. You got four good receivers, and only one ball. I would like to see the Ravens run more hurry-up offense. Joe Flacco seems to play better in the up tempo offense, and that would create more snaps and more opportunities for those receivers. Now, with that said, Cameron has to be careful about having the defense out there too long. That group hasn't been as dominant as in the past. Durrie: Did anyone notice that the ball was spotted on the 30-yard line, but Flacco was sacked on the 25 yard line making Cundiff kick a 48-yard field goal instead of a 43-yarder. He made it but wow. The ref even announced that Flacco was down on the 25 when he fumbled and still spotted in wrong. Mike Preston: Yea, the zebras blew that one and a few more. Like the Ravens secondary, they had a bad day at the office. Stacie: By any chance could the amount of big plays by the Bills caused by the CBs not getting safety help due to the fact that Ed Reed likes to roam around and gamble? Or were the CBs just playing bad and getting beat? Mike Preston: Unless Reed borrowed Superman's cape, there was no way he was getting over to help out the cornerbacks. They were getting beat off the line of scrimmage, and didn't get their hands on the Buffalo receivers. Nate:Cameron is inventive and good at exploiting matchups, but how can you explain his lack of a feel for the game? Mike Preston: Cameron is a good offensive coordinator. Overall, I like his game and his approach. Sometimes, though, he outsmarts himself, like a lot of other offensive coordinators. They try to get too cute at times, and it backfires.
