CATCH OF THE DAY This award goes to defensive player Lamar Divens. During a full-team exercise, outside linebacker Antwan Barnes got his hand on a pass thrown by Marc Bulger. Divens, a 6-foot-3, 343-pound defensive tackle, tracked the ball in the air and dove to snatch it.
BAD START FOR TROY Third-string quarterback Troy Smith's first pass of the morning session was deep to wide receiver Eron Riley along the right sideline and was intercepted by safety Ken Hamlin. On the next play, Smith threw the football directly at Barnes, who dropped it. Barnes did 10 push-ups as penance.
STILL WORKING OUT THE KINKS The offense went 0-for-4 during a full-team two-minute drill. The first series appeared to end with a Joe Flacco-to-Anquan Boldin 9-yard touchdown pass, but the play was waved off after the offense was flagged for an illegal formation.
RUN VS. RUN In an exercise in which the offense needed just 1 yard for a first down, the unit was successful five times in six attempts. But when the ball was moved to the goal line, the defense got a stop five times in six tries.
FLAGS STAY IN POCKET The entire team committed just three penalties. Linebacker Terrell Suggs jumped offside, and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe was whistled for pass interference on tight end Todd Heap. The offense's only miscue was the illegal formation penalty.
KICKING UPDATE With Billy Cundiff getting the day off, Shayne Graham took all the kicks. He converted 12 of 13 field-goal tries, making all six between 30 and 39 yards and all three between 40 and 49 yards. His first attempt from beyond 50 yards, a 53-yarder, went wide right, but Graham later knocked in a pair of field goals from 51 and 53 yards.
INJURIES Offensive tackles Jared Gaither (unspecified) and Stefan Rodgers (right knee and ankle) returned to practice in the morning, as did cornerback Walt Harris (Achilles tendon). Cornerback Chris Carr (lower back), offensive tackle Tony Moll (unspecified) and tight end Davon Drew (hamstring) did not participate. Players who remain on the physically-unable-to-perform list are free safety Ed Reed (hip), center Matt Birk (elbow), cornerback Lardarius Webb (knee), linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo (quadriceps), offensive tackle Oniel Cousins (throat) and running back Matt Lawrence (knee).
OVERHEARD "I can come over there and beat you on one leg!" -- Reed, challenging the offense.
NEXT DAY'S SCHEDULE This morning's practice starts at 8:45 and could run between two and 21/2 hours. The afternoon session begins at 2:45 and is slated to run about two hours.
