Rough start to training camp for Ravens

News item: Ravens cornerback Dominique Foxworth suffered a season-ending knee injury during Thursday's orientation practice at McDaniel College.

My take: It's a big setback — especially coming just days after top draft choice Sergio Kindle suffered a serious head injury in an apparent household accident — and it's going to be difficult for Ozzie Newsome to find anything close to a comparable replacement at this point in training camp.

Bonus take: Of course, it's never a good idea to underestimate Ozzie in this kind of situation.

News item: The Orioles will introduce new manager Buck Showalter to the local media at a news conference at the B&O Warehouse on Monday.

My take: Can't wait. How many chances do you get to shake hands with the world's richest masochist?

News item: The Orioles were swept by the Toronto Blue Jays again this week. They are now 0-12 against the one team in the American League East that many pundits thought they could finish ahead of this year.

My take: Talk about a dirty dozen. The Orioles have become such a laughingstock in Canada that our friends to the north are changing the name of one of their signature drinks. From now on, it's going to be called an American Club on the Rocks.

News item: O's third baseman Miguel Tejada was traded to the division-leading San Diego Padres on Thursday for promising Double-A pitcher Wynn Pelzer.

My take: It's all good. Tejada gets to finish the season with a potential playoff team and the Orioles get a decent minor league pitching prospect for a veteran who wasn't likely to be around next year anyway.

Bonus take: How quickly things change. It was only nine months ago that the Padres were trying to trade the Orioles a third baseman (Kevin Kousmanoff) because they supposedly had a surplus at the position.

News item: Massive Ravens rookie Terrence Cody finally passed his conditioning test on the third try, allowing him to come off the Physically Unable to Perform list and join his teammates for preseason workouts.

My take: That's disappointing. I thought the Ravens finally had a player I could beat in the 25-yard dash.

Related news item: Disgruntled Redskin Albert Haynesworth failed his conditioning test on Thursday and was held out of practice after new coach Mike Shanahan arbitrarily increased the number of 300-yard sprints the veteran defensive tackle was required to run under a certain time.

My take: Clearly, Shanahan was showing Haynesworth — and his teammates — that there's a new sheriff in town. It will be interesting to see how that message gets across.

News item: Nationals pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with soreness in his right shoulder.

My take: Hopefully, this is just the Nationals being overly protective of their new franchise pitcher, who reported shoulder stiffness minutes before he was scheduled to make his 10th major league start. They were planning to limit his innings later this season anyway.

News item: First baseman Derrek Lee has rejected a deal that would have sent him to the Los Angeles Angels, saying that he would rather remain with the fourth-place Cubs.

My take: Actually, it's kind of refreshing to find a player who isn't willing to let a little thing like a better chance of making the playoffs force him out of his comfort zone.

News item: Terrell Owens has reported to the Cincinnati Bengals, saying that he has a lot more football left in him.

My take: Well, we know that he has a lot of something left in him, but I'm not sure it's football.

News item: The PGA Tour is going to allow spectators to bring their cell phones onto the golf course during next week's Wyndham Championship, as long as they keep them in silent mode, don't take pictures or video during the tournament…

My take: …and, of course, delete Tiger Woods' private number.
