Fallston overcomes mistakes, conditions to shut out C. Milton Wright

Fallston overcame a few early mistakes and difficult playing conditions to pick up a 14-0 homecoming win over Harford County rival C. Milton Wright on Friday in the Week 5 Ravens RISE High School Football Showdown.

While many football games around the region were postponed or moved up in a nod to the rain that began Thursday and continued for much of Friday, the game went on as scheduled. The soggy, natural-grass field, the wind, the rain and a chilly night conspired with a pair of sturdy defenses to put scoring at a premium.

Fallston bounced back from a lopsided defeat to Bel Air and improved to 3-2 while C. Milton Wright (3-2) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end.

"It was inspired play after the tough loss at Bel Air last week," said Fallston coach Dave Cesky, who cited the play of inside linebackers Louis Lloyd and Tyler Myers as key to the shutout. "We had a big improvement this week over last week's effort."

Cesky said the conditions were tough, but preferable to playing on artificial turf.

The game remained scoreless until just 1:19 remained in the first half, when Fallston quarterback Andy Stump sprinted around the right end from 1 yard out to put the Cougars on top. That touchdown was set up by set two long passes from Stump to Garrett Phillips.

After another scoreless quarter, Fallston's Chaz Outing rushed for a 1-yard touchdown of his own with 8:25 left in the game and Justin Wolff converted his second extra point to make it 14-0 and essentially clinch the win on this tough night.

Fallston had plenty of early scoring opportunities, but suffered three turnovers. C. Milton Wright's Kyle Appleby had an interception.

The Mustangs couldn't capitalize on those mistakes, however, as three of their first four possessions started deep in their own territory — at their 5-yard line, their 12, and their 5 again.

The Cougars were also twice stopped by the C.M. Wright defense on fourth downs. CM Wright kept trying to run, but was kept in check by the Fallston defense and lost for the first time since Week 1.

It was the first time this season Fallston had been in a close game, having outscored opponents 84-13 in two previous wins and been outscored 101-49 in two losses.
