Ravens DE Derek Wolfe out, CB Jimmy Smith questionable for season opener vs. Raiders

Ravens defensive end Derek Wolfe will not play in Monday’s season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders after missing nearly three weeks of practice.

Wolfe, who was officially ruled out Saturday, hurt his back and hip in the team’s mid-August joint practices against the Carolina Panthers, and he missed the five practices open to reporters this week.

“It’s kind of a lingering-type deal,” coach John Harbaugh said Thursday of Wolfe’s injury. “Hopefully, he’ll be back soon.”

Left tackle Ronnie Stanley and defensive lineman Calais Campbell got days off from practice Saturday. Cornerback Jimmy Smith (ankle) and rookie outside linebacker Daelin Hayes (knee) are listed as questionable. Hayes was a full participant in practice Saturday after being limited Friday.

The Ravens have the depth to withstand the absence of Wolfe, who appeared in 14 games and started eight last season. Justin Madubuike, who started three games as a rookie, has been one of the defense’s bright spots this preseason, and Broderick Washington has elevated his game after a mostly uneventful first year in Baltimore.

The Ravens were also without left tackle Ronnie Stanley and defensive end Calais Campbell at practice Saturday. Campbell typically gets a day off from practice during game weeks, and Stanley is working his way back to full strength from a season-ending ankle injury he suffered last year.
