On a Sunday when quarterback Peyton Manning played old and acted cranky, forcing everybody in Broncos Country to sweat the final score until the very end, a thrilling victory in the season-opener elicited a roar so loud in the stadium that the cheers shook down echoes of great Denver teams from 35 years ago.

"That was some Orange Crush stuff, right there," Randy Gradishar told me.

The old linebacker is now 63 years old, but Gradishar stood tall and proud outside the Denver locker room, after the Broncos beat Baltimore 19-13.

"I'm a firm believer," said current Denver linebacker Brandon Marshall, "in the idea that defense wins championships."

Well, count me as a firm believer this was a victory that did Gradishar and the Orange Crush proud.
