INDIANAPOLIS — The football spiraled perfectly over Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith's left shoulder on fourth down, just past the hands of the Indianapolis Colts defensive back in the final minute of the fourth quarter.
And the pass from Joe Flacco bounced off of the former Maryland standout's hands, ending the Ravens' comeback attempt in a 20-13 loss to the Colts on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium. Colts quarterback Andrew Luck kneeled down following the change of possession to run out the final seconds.
The dropped pass, his second of the game, obviously upset Smith, who finished with three catches for 38 yards on eight targets.
"I'm sick right now," Smith wrote on his official Twitter account after declining interview requests following the game. "never been in this position before … very trying times for me on and off the field but I will be better from this."
It's been a rough season for Smith, who has 11 receptions for 176 yards and one touchdown on 30 targets. In the final year of his contract with no deal imminent, according to sources. Smith is on pace to finish the season with 35 catches for 563 yards and three touchdowns.
Coach John Harbaugh deemed that final ball Sunday as catchable, but one that wasn't easy to corral.
"It was catchable," Harbaugh said of Smith's final drop. "It was a tough catch, it was a challenging play to make, very challenging play to make. Those are not plays you see made every play in the NFL."
