Still exploring their options in the return game, the Ravens worked out free agent wide receiver/return specialist Devin Hester on Friday, according to sources.

It isn't immediately clear if the team is just doing its due diligence or has significant interest in immediately signing the NFL's all-time leader in return touchdowns.

What is clear is the Ravens, who have to trim their roster from 75 to 53 by 4 p.m. Saturday, are still uncertain about who will be their primary return man. Michael Campanaro (River Hill) has handled that role in recent weeks and has been solid on punt returns, averaging 15 yards on his three returns.

However, Campanaro bobbled and then fumbled a kickoff in the first quarter of the Ravens' preseason-closing 23-14 victory over the New Orleans Saints last night.

The Ravens went 4-0 in the preseason for the sixth time in franchise history. More importantly, the four games taught us several things about the team heading

During the preseason, the Ravens used three players on punt returns - Campanaro, rookie Keenan Reynolds and Kaelin Clay who is currently on injured reserve - and seven players to return kicks.

Running backs Kenneth Dixon, Terrance West (Northwestern High, Towson University), Stephen Houston, wide receivers Campanaro, Reynolds and Chris Moore, and cornerback Tavon Young have all gotten an opportunity to return a kick in a preseason game.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh and associate head coach and special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg have been noncommittal this summer when asked about who will be the team's primary return man.

Hester, 33, was let go by the Atlanta Falcons in late July, after he had toe surgery following an injury-marred 2015 campaign. Hester was active for just five games with the Falcons last year, averaging 4.3 yards on eight punt returns, and 26.1 yards on nine kickoff returns.

Several Ravens on the roster "bubble" had strong games against the New Orleans Saints, leaving the organization with tougher decisions to make.

On Aug. 24, Hester posted a video on his Instagram of him working out to show teams he was healthy again. With it, he wrote, "Teams y'all better started calling my Agent I'll be ready in 2 weeks Top!!!!!!!!!!"

Hester, who played the first eight years of his career with the Chicago Bears, is a four-time Pro Bowl selection as a returner. He's believed by some to be the top return man in the history of the league.

He holds the NFL record for return touchdowns with 20 and punt return scores with 14. He also has 255 career receptions for 3,311 yards and 16 touchdowns, although he did not catch any passes last season.
