Source: Former Ravens center Andre Gurode tried out for the Lions

Out of work since not being retained as a free agent by the Ravens, former Pro Bowl center Andre Gurode worked out for the Detroit Lions this week, according to a league source.

Gurode played a reserve role with the Ravens last season after signing a one-year contract.

Gurode was signed to provide depth behind six-time Pro Bowl center Matt Birk, who had surgery on his left knee at the beginning of training camp.

Gurode was cut by the Dallas Cowboys last year for salary-cap reasons.

He visited the Seattle Seahawks, Lions and the New England Patriots before agreeing to terms with the Ravens.

Gurode wasn't immediately signed to a contract as punter Nick Harris was added to the roster.

The Lions also auditioned guard Derek Hardman, Harris, defensive tackle Terrell McClain, who was signed later by the New England Patriots as Marcus Forston was released, defensive tackle Daniel Muir, defensive tackle Ogemdi Nwagbuo, guards Jake Scott and Cory Procter and center Matt Tennant.

** Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons tried out defensive backs Josh Vaughan, Marlin Jackson and Syd'Quan Thompson. Vaughan was signed to the practice squad.

** The Chicago Bears tried out running back Ryan Grant, who signed with the Washingon Redskins as Roy Helu was placed on injured reserve, along with running back Jacob Hester, guard Rishaw Johnson and wide receiver Raymond Radway.

** The Cincinnati Bengals tried out linebacker J.K. Shaffer.

** The Houston Texans tried out linebackers Cameron Collins, Gary Guyton, Cameron Sheffield and Quinton Spears.

** The Indianapolis Colts tried out cornerback Chris Hawkins and offensive tackle Joe Long, the younger brother of Miami Dolphins Pro Bowl offensive tackle Jake Long.

** The Kansas City Chiefs tried out center Sampson Genus and tackles Nick Mondek and Jason Slowey, signing guard Russ Hochstein, former Ravens center Bryan Mattison and placing center Rodney Hudson on injured reserve.

** The Miami Dolphins signed defensive back Jonathon Amaya after a tryout that included him, linebacker Bront Bird, defensive back James Dockery, linebacker Mike Rivera, offensive tackle J.B. Shugarts, defensive back Alphonso Smith and defensive back Morgan Trent.

** The Eagles switched punters, signing Mat McBriar after a tryout. They also worked out guard Pat Boyle and tight end Kyle Nelson.
