A former University of Miami consensus All-American and a runner-up for the Dick Butkus award -- given to the nation's top linebacker -- Lewis had been nominated for induction this year.

Lewis was a two-time All-Big East Conference selection and ranks sixth all-time in school history with 388 career tackles.

Retired since after the Ravens' Super Bowl XLVII victory over the San Francisco 49ers, Lewis was a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, a 13-time Pro Bowl selection and the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXV when the Ravens defeated the New York Giants.

Lewis now works for ESPN as an NFL analyst.

Lewis is competing with former Florida State All-American and Tampa Bay Buccaneers All-Pro linebacker Derrick Brooks along with 92 players and 27 coaches from the divisional ranks and 76 players and five coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision ranks.

The announcement of the 2016 Class will be made Jan. 8, 2016 in conjunction with the college football national championship weekend.

Also nominated: former Baltimore Colts quarterback Bert Jones, an All-American at LSU, Ravens assistant coach Mark Carrier, an All-American safety at USC, former Ravens backup quarterback Randall Cunningham, an All-American at UNLV, former Ravens safety Rod Woodson, an All-American at Purdue, and former Ravens safety Anthony Poindexter, an All-American at Virginia.
