Once a position that was described as boasting five starters, the cornerback spot has become an area of concern for the Ravens.
First-round pick Jimmy Smith will miss his second consecutive game Sunday when the Ravens visit the St. Louis Rams with a high left ankle sprain – an injury that has the rookie limping around the team’s training facility in a cumbersome protective boot.
Chris Carr sat out Sunday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans due to a re-aggravated left hamstring injury, and Domonique Foxworth didn’t disagree with coach John Harbaugh’s suggestion that Foxworth may have to be shelved so that his surgically-repaired right knee can get stronger.
That leaves the defense with just four healthy cornerbacks in starters Cary Williams and Lardarius Webb and reserves Danny Gorrer and rookie Chykie Brown.
“It’s impacting us now,” seven-time Pro Bowl free safety Ed Reed said of the injuries’ effect on the secondary. “That’s the thing. It’s going to be all about preparation. For some of these guys getting ready, that’s going to be the biggest thing.”
There is some good news though. Foxworth has practiced fully and been absent from the team’s injury reports, and although Carr has been limited, he said he intends to play against the Rams.
Harbaugh also sounded optimistic about Carr’s return, saying, “He made it through the week. Practiced full-go today and yesterday. So we’ll just have to see how it responds to today’s practice. I’m fairly optimistic, but with hamstrings, you’re never certain.”
