Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome acknowledged Saturday that the team tried to trade up with the Dallas Cowboys, who had the fourth overall pick, to get in position to take Florida State defensive back Jalen Ramsey.
Now, we know why the deal didn't get done. According to Peter King's Monday Morning QB column today, the Cowboys wanted the Ravens first round (six overall) and third round (70 overall) picks to move back two spots. The Ravens, though, wouldn't budge off their offer of the first rounder and a fourth rounder (104th overall).
So, the Ravens stayed at six overall and selected Notre Dame offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley. They then used the third rounder the Cowboys wanted to take Brigham Young defensive end/outside linebacker Bronson Kaufusi. With the fourth-round pick that they were willing to move to the Cowboys, the Ravens finally added a cornerback in Temple's Tavon Young.
Time will tell whether Newsome's reluctance to include his third-round pick to grab Ramsey will ultimately come back to haunt the Ravens. If Stanley becomes the long-term answer at left tackle and Kaufusi a productive pass-rusher, the Ravens probably won't lament the non-deal too much, even if Ramsey develops into a Pro Bowl performer.
