Despite a need at wide receiver after losing star Steve Smith Sr. to a season-ending Achilles tear on Sunday, the Ravens made only a minor addition in free agency, and no moves at the NFL's 4 p.m. trade deadline.

According to the NFL's transaction wire, the Ravens did not sign any players Tuesday, despite a wide receiver tryout that included former New York Giants and Indianapolis Colts star Hakeem Nicks, Chuck Jacobs and Joe Morgan.

However, the team plans to sign Jacobs to the practice squad, according to a source.

Jacobs, a Utah State product who was signed as an undrafted free agent by the San Francisco 49ers, spent 2013 on the 49ers practice squad under Jim Harbaugh, brother of Ravens coach John Harbaugh, but spent last season on injured reserve after tearing his ACL in the preseason game in Baltimore.

He was cut this year before the end of training camp.

The Ravens could still add a receiver into the spot cleared when Smith goes on injured reserve. But there's just one practice remaining before they have Thursday through Sunday off for the bye week, and even one extra day with the team would benefit any player signed.

The Ravens already made two in-season trades this year as part of an unprecedented flurry of trade action in the first month of the season.

They acquired cornerback Will Davis, who is on season-ending injured reserve with a torn ACL, before Week 3 from the Miami Dolphins, and wide receiver Chris Givens after the Week 4 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Only former Maryland tight end Vernon Davis, who had reportedly become disenchanted in San Francisco, was dealt this week. The Denver Broncos acquired Davis for two late-round draft picks Monday. No players were dealt Tuesday before the deadline.
