Ravens practice squad WR Deonte Thompson to imitate Colts standout T.Y. Hilton

As the Ravens' secondary prepares this week for Indianapolis Colts standout wide receiver T.Y. Hilton, they'll be practicing against someone who can approximate his speed.

Ravens practice squad wide receiver Deonte Thompson will be imitating Hilton on the practice field.

Hilton has 22 receptions for 291 yards this season after catching 82 passes for 1,083 yards and five touchdowns last year.

A former University of Florida track star, Thompson has run the 40-yard dash in 4.24 seconds, slightly faster than Hilton's 4.34 clocking at the NFL scouting combine three years ago. Thompson has run the 100 meters in 10.47 seconds and the 200 meters in 21.29 seconds.

Thompson caught 10 passes for 96 yards last season and three touchdowns during the preseason. He's been on and off the Ravens' roster this season and has yet to play in a game for a deep receiving corps led by Steve Smith.

Thompson has gone unclaimed off waivers each time the Ravens have cut him. Roughly six teams contacted him to try to set up a workout, according to a source, before he re-signed with the AFC North club.

"I have to admit that I'm surprised when we went through this whole situation that he didn't get picked up," Harbaugh said. "Surprised he hasn't been traded for yet, but I'm sure glad he's on our team. That'll be one role for him, but Deonte is right there ready to play, too. If we can get him out there at some point, we will. We're just in a good situation right now with our receivers, but Deonte is a heck of a football player."
