The NFL will hold its annual supplemental draft on Thursday. Eight players are eligible to be selected. The draft will be conducted electronically, with NFL teams essentially submitting bids for any players they covet. The team that offers the highest pick gets the player, and they surrender a corresponding pick in the 2013 draft.
Quarterback Bernie Kosar, linebacker Brian Bosworth and wide receiver Chris Carter are three of the most noteworthy players to have been selected in the supplemental draft. The Ravens have only gone to this well once in their history; they selected towering Maryland offensive tackle Jared Gaither in the fifth round in 2007.
These players are forced to enter the supplemental draft, as opposed to the standard draft, for a reason, and it's usually not a good one. Some were facing long suspensions by the NCAA (Terrelle Pryor in 2011). Others were declared academically ineligible (Gaither) or were booted off their college team (Ahmad Brooks in 2006).
Despite concerns after he was suspended indefinitely for getting busted with marijuana in 2011, Baylor wide receiver Josh Gordon is generating a lot of buzz this week. He didn't play in 2011, and after transferring to Utah, he has chosen the supplemental draft over suiting up for the Utes. But Gordon is 6-foot-4 and he is said to run well for his size. There is speculation that he could be selected by a team in the third round -- or maybe even in the second.
Gordon caught 42 passes for 714 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore (his QB was some guy named Robert Griffin III).
Along with Gordon, Boise State defensive back Quaylon Ewing, Syracuse running back Adam Harris, Iowa State tackle Adrian Haughton, Carson-Newman linebacker Larry Lumpkin, Georgia defensive end Montez Robinson, McMurray wide receiver Houston Tuminello, and TCU running back Ed Wesley have entered the supplemental draft. Wesley, who rushed for 1,078 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2010, could be a late-round supplemental pick.
Players who aren't selected Thursday become free agents.
Should the Ravens be interested in any of these players?
