Ravens draft Penn State guard John Urschel in fifth round

The Ravens picked their first offensive lineman of the draft, selecting Penn State guard John Urschel in the fifth round with the 175th pick.

"It feels fantastic," Urschel said. "Believe me, I'm honored and I'm humbled."

Urschel started 24 games at right guard for Penn State over the past two seasons and excelled on and off the field. He was the recipient of the 2013 William V. Campbell Trophy, given to the nation's top scholar-athlete.

He graduated with a degree in mathematics, finishing with a 4.0 grade-point average during his Penn State career. He's currently working on his second master's degree.

"I got my undergrad in math at Penn State, I got my masters in math," Urschel said. "I published a few papers, I've done some research, but now it's time to focus on football and I'm really just starting that chapter of my life now for a while so I can focus on being exclusively a football player."

On the field, Urschel will provide depth along the interior of the Ravens' offensive line behind projected starting guards Kelechi Osemele and Marshal Yanda.

A two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection after converting from defensive tackle, Urschel was an anchor on the Penn State offensive line. He appeared in 38 games, becoming a full-time starter as a junior. Over the last two seasons, he was credited with 21 touchdown-resulting blocks.

He is 6-foot-3 and 313 pounds, good size for an offensive lineman.

The Ravens have one more pick remaining at 194 overall in the sixth round.
