Ravens security director Darren Sanders is now facing a second-degree assault charge in circuit court, according to Maryland court records.
When Sanders' fourth-degree sex offense case was shifted from district court to circuit court, the state added the additional charge.
Second-degree assault is a misdemeanor with a maximum punishment, if convicted, of up to 10 years imprisonment, a fine of up to $2,500 or both. The fourth-degree sex offense charge carries a maximum punishment of up to a year in prison and a fine of up to $500 or both.
"We're not surprised by this additional charge," Sanders' lawyer, Warren Alperstein, said. "This is not based on any new evidence."
Sanders was first charged in December, after allegations against him surfaced Dec. 14 at M&T Bank Stadium. A 34-year-old woman who works on a cleaning crew at Ravens games called police and alleged that Sanders groped her buttocks, kissed her neck and attempted to make her touch his genitals.
Initially scheduled for a court appearance Monday afternoon, Sanders has now been assigned an arraignment on March 12.
