He earned a degree in journalism from Marquette in 1971.
Byrne returned to Marquette as sports information director during baskeball coach Al McGuire's legendary years (1974-77) , including the 1977 national championship. He then became the youngest PR director in the NFL when was hired by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1977.
After working as Trans World Airlines' director of public affairs, he returned to the NFL with Cleveland Browns. For the past 32 years, Byrne has been with the Ravens' public and community relations departments. His staff was honored with the Pete Rozelle Award by the Pro Football Writers of America, a national award given to the NFL PR team that consistently strives for excellence in its service for and relationships with the media.
During his time as a Marquette student, Byrne was a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, the National Jesuit Honor Society and a four-year member of the wrestling team.
The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Alumni Awards ceremony is part of Marquette University’s Alumni Awards weekend, April 26-28. It also happens to be the same days as the NFL Draft.
