Ravens' 14 penalties prove costly in loss to Chargers

"There was some plays made, some plays not made," said John Harbaugh. "[The Chargers] stopped us running the ball a couple times, which I think was probably the key." (Kevin Richardson/Baltimore Sun video)

During their 34-33 loss to the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, the Ravens committed way too many self-inflicted wounds.

They were flagged for an uncharacteristic 14 penalties for 98 yards.

"It's extremely frustrating," outside linebacker Terrell Suggs said. "We know better. We never want to leave it in the hands of the refs. It was just an all-around bad day."

That included five offsides penalties on defense, including three from Elvis Dumervil and one apiece from fellow outside linebackers Suggs and Pernell McPhee.

"It was way too many penalties," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "No question about that."

Dumervil was the biggest culprit, repeatedly lining up in the neutral zone.

"You can't do that," Dumervil said. "We made some good plays, and there's some things you wish you could take back."
