Ravens draft preview: Quarterbacks

Every weekday through April 25, the day before the first round of the NFL draft, The Sun will examine where the Ravens stand at each position, the likelihood that they will address that spot early in the draft and some of the prospects that they may consider.

Today, we'll examine the quarterback position:

Current quarterbacks under contract: Joe Flacco, Tyrod Taylor

Chances that the Ravens draft a QB in first three rounds: None. Though there was plenty written about the prospect of adding a veteran backup to Flacco last year, the Ravens went all season with two active quarterbacks on their roster. Flacco, who will begin his fifth season as the starter, has never missed a game in his career. While he seemingly is criticized for everything, nobody can question his durability and toughness. The Ravens are also extremely high on Taylor, who was a sixth-round pick last April. The Ravens will bring in at least one more quarterback just for insurance purposes and to take some reps in training camp, but they'll likely get that guy as an undrafted free agent.

Possibly on Ravens' radar: B.J. Coleman (Tennessee-Chattanooga), Case Keenum (Houston), Ryan Lindley (San Diego State), Kellen Moore (Boise State), Darron Thomas (Oregon).

Outlook: The Ravens are hoping to reach a long-term extension with the 27-year-old Flacco this offseason so barring a significant injury, we are years away from needing to talk about his potential successor. It's also again worth mentioning that general manager Ozzie Newsome has praised Taylor, 22, on several occasions and maintained that the organization thinks the former Virginia Tech Hokie will be a starting quarterback in the NFL. While quarterbacks have dominated the lead-up to this draft, it would be surprising if the Ravens used any of their eight draft picks on a signal caller. They'll probably wait until later and sign an undrafted free agent or a veteran looking for a No. 3 job.
