ANN ARBOR, MICH. — Running back Wes Brown's 1-yard touchdown plunge with six minutes left to play was enough to push Maryland to a historic 23-16 victory over Michigan on Saturday.
The Wolverines (5-6, 3-4 Big Ten Conference) had won the three previous meetings with Maryland (7-4, 4-3), most recently in 1990, 45-17.
"I told our guys we needed to come out here and make some memories so that we could have a reunion 30 years from now and reminisce about the good things," Maryland coach Randy Edsall said. "To beat Penn State on the road and beat Michigan on the road and go 5-1 on the road in our first year in the league is special."
Terps kicker Brad Craddock hit field goals from 38, 41 and 21 yards out in the first half, extending his school record to 23 consecutive makes. Michigan's Matt Wile also made three field goals (22, 33 and 26) for the Wolverines, who entered halftime tied at 9.
Quarterback Devin Gardner's 15-yard touchdown run, his first score since Oct. 4, gave Michigan a 16-9 lead with 10:25 to play in the third quarter.
Only 13 seconds into the fourth quarter, Terps quarterback C.J. Brown tied the game with an 8-yard rushing touchdown, the school-record 54th of his career (31 passing, 23 rushing). Against the nation's ninth-ranked total defense and seventh-ranked rushing defense, the senior finished with 87 rushing yards and 165 passing yards.
After Wile missed a 39-yard field goal on Michigan's next drive, Brown moved Maryland to the Wolverines 3 with a 36-yard pass to wide receiver Amba Etta-Tawo, setting up the decisive score.
