Joe Flacco headlines group of nine Ravens players absent from Wednesday's practice
The Ravens opened practice today without nine players, and the most significant absence was quarterback Joe Flacco.
After practice, Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Flacco has a right shoulder injury, but said he could play Sunday against the Jets.
"He has a legitimate shot at playing Sunday, " Harbaugh said.
Flacco said best thing for him is rest, that it's not a major issue. He also said he hopes to play Sunday.
He had not missed a practice in training camp or the regular season since recovering from torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee. Although he was not listed as one of the players injured in Sunday's 27-23 loss to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., Flacco reported the injury to the training staff.
The Ravens, losers of three straight, would likely start Ryan Mallett at quarterback if Flacco's injury is too serious to play Sunday. David Fales is on the practice squad.
The team also practiced without outside linebackers Terrell Suggs (left biceps) and Elvis Dumervil (foot), cornerbacks Shareece Wright (pulled hamstring) and Jerraud Powers (groin), return specialist Devin Hester Sr. (thigh), inside inebacker C.J. Mosley hamstring), wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. (ankle) and right guard Marshal Yanda (shoulder).
Coach John Harbaugh said on Monday that Suggs and Yanda are unlikely to play Sunday against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. Wright announced on a radio program on Tuesday that he had injured his hamstring against the Giants
The Ravens got some good news as cornerback Jimmy Smith was at practice today. Smith, who had sustained a concussion in the second quarter on Sunday, wore a red, non-contact pinnie over his jersey. Wide receivers Mike Wallace and Breshad Perriman also wore red pinnies over their jerseys.
Offensive tackles Ronnie Stanley and Rick Wagner also practiced. Stanley has sat out three consecutive games because of a foot ailment, while Wagner did not play in Sunday's loss because of a thigh injury.
And running back Lorenzo Taliaferro made his first appearance at practice since being placed on the reserve physically unable to perform list on Aug 30. Taliaferro underwent surgery a year ago to repair a Lisfranc foot sprain and did not participate in practices during training camp.
