The news that Ravens running back Ray Rice was arrested and charged with simple assault-domestic violence for an incident involving his fiancee at an Atlantic City casino has triggered a gamut of emotions from fans on social media, including shock, anger and disappointment.
The incident didn't match up with the experiences of Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell while coaching Rice as the Ravens' offensive coordinator for the past two seasons. Until this legal situation, Rice had a sterling reputation previously for his involvement in the community as an anti-bullying advocate.
When asked if he was surprised by the allegations surrounding Rice, Caldwell replied: "I certainly don't want to comment directly on that. Ray is a great person. Ray is a very fine human being. All I've ever known is Ray to be exemplary in every way."
Rice allegedly knocked out his fiancee, Janay Palmer at Revel Casino, according to a police complaint and the case has been referred to prosecutors. She was also charged with simple assault-domestic violence.
The case will be reviewed by the NFL under the personal-conduct policy.
