"Not only did he apologize with contrition, his wife forgave him, God has forgiven him," Jackson said. "He wants to go on with his life. ... Why give him a lifetime sentence?"

Rice, attempting to return to the league after missing all of last season following the fallout from a domestic violence incident in February 2014, has not been invited to an NFL training camp this year.

Columnists for ESPNW, USA TodayThe Houston ChronicleThe Baltimore Sun and others have called for a team to give the former Pro Bowl running back a look.

A Call To Men, a national organization that encourages men to end violence against women, has also said Rice should get another chance to play.
