Ravens free safety Ed Reed has appealed his $21,000 fine for unnecessary roughness during a 31-30 victory over the New England Patriots, according to a league source.
Reed struck a defenseless player, wide receiver Deion Branch, in the head and neck area, according to a league spokesman.
Reed was penalized for a personal foul for his crushing hit on Branch where he made contact with the receiver's helmet with a forearm.
Branch was momentarily shaken up, but got up smiling and continued to play.
Reed also delivered a big hit on Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman to break up a potential touchdown pass in the end zone, but that shot was regarded as within the rules by the officials and the league office.
