Art Modell not among semifinalists for Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2014

Former Ravens and Cleveland Browns majority owner Art Modell didn't make the list of 25 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2014 announced Wednesday night.

The list of semifinalists includes linebacker Derrick Brooks, wide receiver Marvin Harrison and coach Tony Dungy.

Modell, who passed away in 2012 at age 87, was a finalist for induction last year for just the second time -- the other time was in 2001. Modell made the cut as a semifinalist in eight of the past nine years, including last year.

Modell has had a difficult path to Canton, Ohio, home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, largely because of the controversy surrounding his move of the original Browns to Baltimore.

Modell, an NFL owner for 43 years, was one of the architects of Monday Night Football and helped negotiate significant television contracts while owning championship squads in Baltimore and Cleveland.

Former Ravens All-Pro offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden, the first draft pick in franchise history, expressed his support for Modell when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in August.

"Without a doubt, one of the most generous and kindest individuals that I have ever met," Ogden said. "I really wish he could be with me today. Someone once said to me, if you can't tell the history of the game of football without mentioning this person, then they are with a doubt a Hall of Famer.

"Well, there is no way you can tell the history of pro football without mentioning Art Modell so hopefully one day we can get him here because what he's meant to the league has been tremendous."

Meanwhile, former New York Giants general manager George Young was named a semifinalist as a contributor.

Young is a Baltimore native who coached at Baltimore City College where his team won six Maryland Scholastic Association championships in 15 years. He earned a pair of Master's degrees from Johns Hopkins and Loyola College.
