Many reasons for runners to support favorite races

Runners cross the starting line in the 41st Annapolis Ten Mile Run.

With the plethora of local races on the calendar, it is imperative for runners to jump in and support those events they hold most dear. If you expect to see your favorite event (s) on the list of upcoming races, it is necessary for them to receive your support. So, pick out several events that you enjoy and let the organizers know that they can count on you to be there for them.

Volunteers can make or break the future of many events. There remains good reason to support your local races and health and fitness are among them. There are many running classes currently underway in the county and seeing the smiling faces of graduates at the finish lines is testimony to their success. These graduates are in fact the future of local running organizations. When they realize the benefits they accrue from running, a good number will gladly give of their time to support causes that benefit from the fees they pay to participate in events.

I recall when I discovered that running was something I enjoyed, getting involved with race management was a logical next step. At the time, I was trying to quit smoking and, luckily for me, I was able to trade the smoking for running. I can say that was the best decision I have ever made. It was reinforced by the fact that you meet some of the nicest people when you get into running.

Combining a healthy activity with making new friends is a formula for success. And, when you have the great running weather we have enjoyed this spring, you can see the reason to keep at it. Enjoy your running – you are very lucky to be able to get out and improve your fitness level!
