Annapolis brings in former Natural Resources police officer as harbormaster

Annapolis has a new harbormaster after the previous one and the deputy harbormaster were both fired when money went missing from their office safe.

Natural Resources Police Lt. Beth Mauk will start as the city's new harbormaster on Thursday, Oct. 20. She will make $94,799.66 a year.

Mauk replaces J.P. "Flip" Walters, who was fired in April when it was discovered more than $3,400 was missing from the safe in the Harbormaster's Office on City Dock. deputy harbormaster William Brooks was also fired, whom Walters believed had stolen the money and was trying to get returned.

Walters fought his firing but the city's decision was upheld by the Annapolis Civil Service Board.

Mauk has worked with the Maryland Natural Resources Police Department from October 1998 to March 2016 and has taught classes in boating law and her background includes conservation, criminal boating and traffic law, according to a city news release.

Before accepting the harbormaster position Mauk served as shift commander for the Anne Arundel Community Department of Public Safety and Police.
