Lisa Lin, 11, of Clarksburg won the Girls' Hopes Trials last weekend in Dunellen, N.J., defeating practice partner Tiffany Ke, 11, of Gaithersburg in the final.
Lisa, who attends Rocky Hill Middle School, became the first player to clinch a spot on the USA National Hopes team. Both players train at the Maryland Table Tennis Center in Gaithersburg. The trials were for the best U.S. players under age 12.
By winning Lisa qualifies for the North American qualifier, to be held April 9-10 in Canada, with the winner there going to the World Hopes Finals, to be held at the ITTF Hopes Week on May 29-June 4 in Doha, Qatar.
There will be three more U.S. qualifiers, with the four eventual winners all competing in the North American trials against the top four Canadians. Tiffany will be competing in the other Trials and might still qualify for the North American trials.
Ronald Chen, 11, who also trains at the Maryland Table Tennis Center, lost in the semifinals, 3-1, to Jayden Zhou of New Jersey last weekend.
