Trout fishing

Wednesday, Nov. 2: DNR biologist Alan Heft will discuss "Catch-and-Release Fishing" for freshwater trout at a meeting of the Free State Fly Fishers at 7:30 p.m. at Davidsonville Family Recreation Center, Queen Anne Bridge Road.

Had he tussled with that black bear Monday, John Kennedy would have lost. Kennedy weighs 150 pounds; the bear peering at him from the edge of a ravaged Allegany County farm field weighed nearly four times that. But Kennedy had a rifle, and the bear had a belly full of corn.

ClearShark Kids Run

Across the Bay 10K

Next Sunday, Nov. 6: The Across the Bay 10K: Chesapeake Bay Bridge Run will be held, with the first wave of runners starting at 7 a.m. Register at bridgerace.com through Nov. 2. Cost is $70.

Heritage Tours

Nov. 8: Captain Rachel Dean of Solomon's Island Heritage Tours will talk at the November meeting of the Northwest chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association. She will discuss harvesting methods for blue crabs, finfish and oysters on board a working fishing vessel. The meeting will be at the Patapsco Council No. 1960 Knights of Columbus Hall at 1010 Frederick Road, Catonsville. Use the Beaumont Avenue (side) entrance. Doors open at 6 p.m.; the talk begins at 7:30 p.m. Bierbender Knife Sharpeners will recondition blades at discounted prices.

Bay Fall Classic

Nov. 18-20: MSSA's 24th annual "Chesapeake Bay Fall Classic" will be held. Anglers are allowed to fish two of three days with a lay-day rule in effect. Register at mssa.net.

Nov. 20: The Baltimore County Game & Fish Protective Association will conduct a turkey shoot on club grounds at 3400 Northwind Road in Carney from noon to 3 p.m. Test your skill and win a turkey, ham or bacon. It seems the only thing that can slow the bite has been the wind, and there's been plenty of that. Near gale winds over the weekend and a blow this week did keep some folks either at the dock or confined to the shelter of creeks and rivers.
