The club wanted options in its bullpen for the upcoming three-game series against the Detroit Tigers -- and especially a right-hander who can serve in long relief. With McFarland sent down, the Orioles currently have no designated long men and still have three left-handers in the bullpen.
Candidates to be called up could include Josh Stinson, assuming the club places him back on the 40-man roster, as well as Steve Johnson, who recently returned from injury, and Suk-min Yoon, who has struggled with consistency.
Right-handed starters Kevin Gausman and Mike Wright pitched Saturday and Sunday, respectively, so they presumably would not be ready to come out of the Orioles bullpen Monday.
Brach was sent down May 6, and therefore, he would not be eligible right now to replace McFarland.
