Sorting through the effects of Tuesday's rainout on the Orioles' starting rotation

Orioles right-hander Miguel Gonzalez, who was scheduled to pitch in Tuesday's rainout, will get the start in Wednesday afternoon's series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Chris Tillman was supposed to start Wednesday, and he's pitched extremely well on regular rest, posting a 3.20 ERA since the beginning of the 2013 season on four days off.

But Gonzalez has pitched pretty well against the Rays over his career, posting a 3.94 ERA in eight career starts against them. Comparatively speaking, Tillman owns a 4.90 career ERA against Tampa Bay in 11 career starts, including a 1-3 mark and 5.09 ERA during his 16-win season last year.

The Opening Day starter should likely get the start Friday in Boston following Thursday's off day. Orioles manager Buck Showalter has yet to announce his rotation for the four-game series against the Red Sox. That could come this morning.

Inserting Tillman for Friday also allows the Orioles to have right-hander Bud Norris, who was originally scheduled to start Friday, available in the bullpen Wednesday.

And if the Orioles need to call on Norris out of the bullpen, they'd still be able to keep the other starters -- Ubaldo Jimenez, Wei-Yin Chen and Gonzalez -- on their regular schedule and could push Norris back to make his next start in the Toronto series next week.

Norris has done well against the Blue Jays, pitching to a 2.45 ERA in two starts, including seven innings of shutout ball on Saturday.
