SARASOTA, Fla. – The Orioles will head down to Fort Myers today for their first spring meeting with the Boston Red Sox at JetBlue Park.
Left-hander Brian Matusz will start for the Orioles. He was originally scheduled to fly to Philadelphia to have a wart removed from his left middle finger, but that trip has been postponed because of the expectations of bad weather up north.
Matusz said he and the club agreed that it didn't make sense risking a travel delay going up or being postponed coming back to Florida. So instead they will reschedule it based on the doctor's availablility.
Matusz can still pitch despite the wart because it is on the inside of his finger and doesn't affect his grip, but the team wants to get it lasered off sooner than later so it doesnt grow and become a problem. He is going to Philadelphia because he's going to see the same doctor that removed a wart in the same spot three years ago.
Today, Matusz will face Boston slugger David Ortiz. Ortiz is 1-for-20 with 12 strikeouts in his career against Matusz.
Outfielder Henry Urrutia, who has been shut down for two days after experiencing soreness in his throwing arm, did not make the trip to Fort Myers on Sunday.
Urrutia said he first felt discomfort in his arm during Friday’s spring training opener against the Tampa Bay Rays in Port Charlotte after making a throw to third base. He said he’s never experienced any pain in his shoulder in the past and that it doesn’t affect his swing at the plate.
“I feel better,” Urrutia said through first baseman Chris Marrero, who served as an interpreter for him. “I think it was just something where I didn’t stretch it or warm my arm up.”
The soreness isn’t considered to be serious, but he will be re-evaluated in a couple days after taking some anti-inflammatory medicine and resting his arm.
When Urrutia made his brief major league debut last season, was served exclusively as a designated hitter, but he’s been impressive in the outfield thus far this spring, something the Orioles need to see for him to make the 25-man roster after missing two baseball seasons in Cuba.
