Orioles promote 2009 first-round pick Matt Hobgood to High-A Frederick

The Orioles promoted 2009 first-round pick Matt Hobgood to High-A Frederick on Tuesday after he started the season at Low-A Delmarva. It's the highest level for Hobgood in his professional career.

Hobgood, who missed all of the 2012 season after undergoing surgery on the rotator cuff in his right arm, has pitched primarily in a relief role for the Shorebirds after beginning his professional career as a starter.

The 6-foot-4, 245-pound Hobgood was 7-3 with a 3.71 ERA in 24 appearances (one start) this year for Delmarva before the promotion. He struck out 47 hitters and walked 28 in 63 innings.

In four minor-league seasons, Hobgood is 11-18 with a 4.98 ERA.
