Orioles minor-league pitcher Jonatan Isenia, injured in WBC, having MRI on elbow

SARASOTA, Fla. -- An MRI revealed that Orioles minor league pitcher Jonatan Isenia has a UCL strain in his elbow, an injury sufferef while he was pitching for the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic.

The team will take a conservative approach" to his rehab, executive vice president Dan Duquette said, meaning Isenia will rest for several weeks and is not scheduled for surgery at this time.

Isenia, a 19-year-old Curacao native, was a late addition to the Netherlands roster. He just completed his first professional season, going 0-1 with a 1.47 ERA in 13 relief appearances and allowing 14 hits with 10 strikeouts over 18 1/3 innings.

He threw just 3 2/3 innings in the World Baseball Classic, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks. He was added to the Netherlands roster when the final rosters were released.

Other minor league items of note:

--  The Orioles signed left-handed pitcher Clayton Tanner to a minor league deal on Sunday after scouting him pitching for Australia in the World Baseball Classic. Tanner pitched just one scoreless inning in WBC play with one strikeout and one walk. A third-round pick of the Giants in 2006, he spent time in the Giants and Reds systems, reaching the Triple-A level briefly in 2011 and 2012. But Tanner is just 25 and has a promising curveball and changeup. Tanner will likely compete for a spot in Double-A or Triple-A in minor league camp.

--  The team also signed 24-year-old second baseman Tucker Nathans to a minor league deal. Nathans played for the Newark Bears of the Can-Am Independent League and compiled a .307/.362/.457. hitting line with 5 homers, 30 RBIs and 6 steals and won the league’s Rookie of the Year award. He’s known for being a good athlete – he also played Division-I soccer at Fairfield. He had a standout season in the New England Collegiate Baseball League in 2010.
