Notes: Giants closer Wilson suffers 'mild' oblique strain

GIANTS: Closer Brian Wilson strained his left oblique, his second setback this spring. Manager Bruce Bochy called the injury "mild," and Wilson said he'll be ready for the start of the regular season. Bochy said he was concerned and would address the issue after Wilson is re-evaluated Monday. Wilson was sidelined by a stiff lower back earlier this spring.

BREWERS: Starter Shaun Marcum got a good report on his right shoulder. He likely will miss his next start but should be ready for the regular season. He left Thursday's game early with tightness in the shoulder.

TWINS: Joe Mauer caught five innings in a 9-2 win over the Rays, his first action behind the plate this spring. Mauer, who had minor offseason knee surgery, had a hit and a walk, drove in two and scored twice.

EXTRA INNINGS: A.J. Burnett will follow CC Sabathia in the Yankees rotation with Phil Hughes at No. 3. Rotation candidate Freddy Garcia gave up five runs in six innings in a 5-5 tie with the Blue Jays. GM Brian Cashman said the decision on the fourth and fifth spots will come "sooner than later." ... Jason Kendall will not catch in the Royals' opener but could return by mid-April. He is well ahead of schedule after September shoulder surgery. He is scheduled to catch five to six innings in a minor league game Sunday. … Orioles first baseman Derrek Lee (wrist) made his spring debut in a 7-5 loss to the Phillies, going 0-for-1 with a walk and a run scored. … Blue Jays reliever Frank Francisco (pectoral) was scratched from a Sunday minor league appearance. … The Reds' Johnny Cueto left a start early for the second straight game. He was set to pitch four or five innings but left after one. He left his March 11 start with tightness in his right forearm and biceps.Tribune news services
