Glut of free-agent relievers as agents try to pump up price

This is a frustrating time for Rafael Soriano and the glut of free-agent relievers. The market froze after the Tigers gave Joaquin Benoit $16.5 million over three years, with agents seeking bigger contracts for those with better credentials. Teams aren't budging as the large supply includes Kevin Gregg, Kerry Wood, Jesse Crain, Arthur Rhodes, Brian Fuentes, Frank Francisco, Matt Guerrier, Bobby Jenks, Hideki Okajima and another 10 guys you would like to have but are relatively interchangeable. … Marvin Miller says he asked the Hall of Fame not to include him on the Veterans Committee ballot, but his request wasn't honored. It seems humane to let a person who has been rejected multiple times remove his name from consideration. The semi-annual rejections didn't do much for Cubs great Ron Santo, who let himself grow hopeful every time only to be crushed. … How bold is Scott Boras? After the Red Sox traded for Adrian Gonzalez, he reminded them Adrian Beltre was still available to be re-signed, suggesting Kevin Youkilis could move to left field rather than third base. … Beltre's best bet has to be with the Angels, doesn't it? There is a thought the Rangers could sign him and use Michael Young as a super utility man and DH. … The Orioles' Andy MacPhail on how to compete against the Yankees, Red Sox, Rays and Blue Jays: "We're going to start a mid-Atlantic division." … Two things to know about Carl Crawford — he isn't comfortable anywhere except left field (he could play center at Fenway) and he doesn't want to hit leadoff or in the middle of the order. So look for him to do what he was doing with the Rays, playing left field and hitting second.
