Orioles' Trey Mancini suffers bruised elbow when hit by pitch in first inning; X-rays negative

The Orioles got a major scare on Wednesday afternoon when presumptive All-Star Trey Mancini was hit on the left elbow by a pitch and forced out of the series finale against the Oakland A’s, but X-rays proved negative and he could return to action in a few days.Mancini went to the ground in obvious pain after he was struck on the left elbow by a pitch from A’s starter Chris Bassitt. He was attended to by the Orioles trainers at home plate and walked off the field holding his arm.“I was expecting the worst,’’ manager Brandon Hyde said. “It didn’t look good when I went out there. He was in some serious pain and so you’re hopeful, and we got lucky.”The team announced during the third inning that Mancini suffered a “left elbow contusion.”“Luckily, there’s nothing fractured or broken,’’ Mancini said after the game. “There’s going to be some swelling, so I’m not really sure of the timetable. Whenever that subsides and it feels better, then I’ll be back out there.”Mancini said he was fairly sure it was not a serious injury, but was relieved to have that confirmed.“I didn’t think it was broken or anything like that, but it’s always good to know that for a fact and get the X-rays just to be sure,’’ he said. “It’s a tough spot. The elbow is very important in multiple facets of baseball, so it’s kind of a tough spot to get hit.”Still, it was a frightening moment. If it had turned out to be a significant injury, it would have been a tremendous loss for the Orioles, who already are nearly devoid of star power during the first full year of a long-term rebuilding project.He is leading the team in virtually every offensive category and ranks in the top 10 in the American League in runs, hits, extra-base hits, total bases, batting average and slugging percentage.Mancini currently ranks 17th among AL outfielders in All-Star balloting, but is the favorite to represent the Orioles in the Midsummer Classic.He was replaced in the lineup at first base by Chris Davis.DEVELOPING - Trey Mancini left Wednesday afternoon&#39;s game after being hit by a pitch on the elbow. pic.twitter.com/1vazgXVYOs&mdash; Orioles on MASN (@masnOrioles) June 19, 2019
