Orioles on deck: Asher claimed, plus what to watch Thursday at Yankees, lineups and more

Orioles (1-5) vs. Yankees (4-2)

Where: Yankee Stadium, New York

First pitch: 6:35 p.m.

Chris Davis is 1-for-20 hitting in the leadoff spot this season for the Orioles, meaning it's likely time to end the experiment.

Orioles lose Asher, keep Kelly

The Orioles announced Thursday that right-hander Alec Asher has been claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers and right-hander Michael Kelly cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Double-A Bowie. Both had been designated for assignment on Opening Day.

Asher, 26, was early success story with the Orioles last season, but fell off after getting a look in the rotation in late May and early June. Kelly, 25, was signed away from the San Diego Padres during the winter meetings. He has never reached the majors.

What to watch

1. Welcome to the AL East. After allowing three homers and five runs (four earned) in a rough Orioles debut, Andrew Cashner gets a chance for redemption in his first career start at Yankee Stadium. He has faced the Yankees before, going 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA in three career starts against them. Last year, he held them to one run on four hits in seven innings on Sept. 9.

2. Low five. The Orioles come in having lost five straight since a win on Opening Day. It marks the 10th time in franchise history that they've started 1-5 or worse. See if they can halt the slide against the class of the division.

3. Slim pickings vs. Tanaka. Adam Jones is the only current Orioles player who has faced Masahiro Tanaka more than once and posted a batting average above .240. Jones has hit .333 with a homer in 21 career at-bats against Tanaka. The next best is Chris Davis — at .238. Plus, Tanaka struck out eight and allowed a run in six innings in his season debut.
