The Orioles aren’t picking sides in the UMBC-Virginia rivalry sparked by the Retrievers’ upset of the top-seeded Cavaliers in March’s NCAA tournament.
The Orioles announced this week that they have added Virginia to their list of University Nights, a rotation of college-themed event nights that features Orioles caps in the corresponding school’s colors. The Cavaliers-specific game is booked for Sept. 12, against the Oakland Athletics.
Some fans from Maryland-based schools, including UMBC, weren’t thrilled.
In May, the Orioles had already expanded their roster from 2017’s three (Maryland, Towson and Morgan State). UMBC had a night specifically honoring the men’s basketball team’s accomplishment on April 20, and is slated to have another on Aug. 27.
Virginia isn’t the only school from south of the state line. In fact, there are now almost as many Virginia schools represented as Maryland ones (excluding Georgetown, which is, of course, in Washington).
Here is an updated schedule:
Aug. 11 — James Madison
Aug. 15 — Virginia Tech
Aug. 24 — Towson
Aug. 27 — UMBC
Aug. 28 — Virginia Commonwealth
Aug. 29 — Coppin State
Sept. 12 — Virginia
Sept. 13 — Morgan State
Sept. 16 — Georgetown
Sept. 19 — Maryland
Fans can go online to purchase the limited ticket packages at orioles.com/university. Costs range from $20 to sit in Upper Reserve, sections 316-356, to $31 to sit in Left Field Lower Box, sections 66-86.
