What to watch
1. Letās get it started. While Opening Day marks just one of 162 games this season, a good start for the Orioles is of utmost importance. Beginning with the Twins, 14 of the Oriolesā first 17 games and 18 of the first 24 are against teams that made the playoffs in 2017. By end of business April 20, the Orioles will have played the Twins, Astros, Yankees, Red Sox and Indians ā all five clubs that represented the American League in the 2017 postseason.
2. A first for Bundy. Dylan Bundy, the Oriolesā 2011 first-round draft pick, makes his first career Opening Day start, becoming the fourth member of the teamās rotation to earn that honor. Chris Tillman, Kevin Gausman and Andrew Cashner have all made at least one Opening Day start in his career. The question is which version will show up ā spring Bundy or regular-season Bundy? In five starts this spring, Bundy had a 7.20 ERA, not so different from the 7.41 spring ERA he posted in the same number of starts before last season. He went on to be the Oriolesā most consistent starter in 2017, opening with eight straight quality starts. Will he begin in similar fashion this year?
3. A new look. Much has changed since last Opening Day, as the Orioles lineup Thursday includes just four players that started the first game a year ago. Gone are J.J. Hardy, Welington Castillo, Seth Smith and Hyun Soo Kim, and Mark Trumbo is on the disabled list. Trey Mancini, Tim Beckham, Craig Gentry, Caleb Joseph and Pedro Ćlvarez start in their places in 2018, with Chris Davis leading off. Danny Valencia and Colby Rasmus could be regulars instead of Gentry and Ćlvarez. Thursdayās game provides the first glimpse of whether newer means better for this group.
